Records show that a large Gallo-Roman villa stood on this site back in the 3rd century, and substantial traces of it can be seen to this day in the Hôtel de Sade. If you walk down the dead end at the bottom of Place Favier, you’ll see remains of the villa’s monumental baths. The existing building dates from the 15th century, when Saint Rémy aristocrat Agnès Hugolen de Fos married into the Provençal De Sade family and decided to build a grand residence here. It underwent extensive restoration after 1945.
